Who we are and what we stand for – an overview
As one of the world’s largest professional societies in this field, with members from more than a dozen countries, the Austrian Society for Mountain and High Altitude Medicine (ÖGAHM) serves as a communication and information forum for all individuals, institutions, and associations interested in mountain and high altitude medicine.
In addition to promoting relevant research projects, our special task lies in the closest possible integration of science and practice in all areas of mountain sports medicine. This also includes the dissemination, intensification, and coordination of national and international alpine and high altitude medical knowledge within and outside the medical profession.
In addition to all forms of mountaineering, we also address skiing, trekking and expedition activities, alpine travel and holiday medicine, health prevention and therapy in the mountains, accident prevention in skiing and mountaineering, as well as other related subject areas.
We organize congresses, symposia, courses, and continuing education events, and publish periodic newsletters, information sheets, specialist publications, resolutions, and more. Our members can preferentially participate in all activities of the society and are encouraged to contribute to shaping them through their own input. The Austrian Society for Mountain and High Altitude Medicine is open not only to physicians but also to all interested individuals and institutions, both domestic and international.
ÖGAHM cooperates closely with the ISMM (International Society for Mountain Medicine), with the Medical Commissions of the UIAA (Union Internationale des Associations d’Alpinisme – International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation) and the IKAR (International Commission for Alpine Rescue), as well as with the Austrian Mountain Rescue Service, the alpine associations of Austria, the Austrian Medical Association, the Austrian Sports Physicians’ Association, the German Sports Physicians’ Association, the BExMed (German Society for Mountain and Expedition Medicine), and other national alpine medical societies.
